Protagonist: The main protagonist of The Hobbit is Bilbo Baggins, though Thorin Oakenshield could be considered as well. While Bilbo originally goes joins Thorin's company as a way of going on an adventure, Thorin has the singular goal of taking back the Lonely Mountain from Smaug, the dragon, throughout the course of the story.
Round Character: An example of a round character in The Hobbit is Thorin Oakenshield. The entire story is based on his quest to rebuild the Dwarf Kingdom to its former glory. Without his existence, the story would never have occurred.

Flat Character: An example of flat characters would be the trolls that were turned to stone near the beginning of the story. They were only there to make the journey across Middle-Earth more interesting by adding some suspense. They also served the purpose of further developing the relationships between characters, particularly the dwarves and Bilbo.
